The Tradition of Sabrage
Sabrage is a ceremonial technique for opening a champagne bottle with a saber, traditionally used for celebratory occasions. The wielder slides the saber along the body seam of the bottle to the lip, breaking the top of the neck away and leaving the bottle open and ready to pour. This technique became popular in France when Napoleon's light cavalry, the Hussars, celebrated victories by opening champagne with their sabers. Napoleon's spectacular victories across Europe provided plenty of reason to celebrate, and during these parties, the cavalry would open the champagne bottles in this dramatic fashion.
Today, sabrage is often performed at special events and celebrations, adding a touch of historical flair and excitement to the occasion.
