Ballistol Silicone Spray – Lubrication Without Oil and Grease

Ballistol Silicone Spray is a versatile, clean and odorless silicone-based product that works as a lubricant, release agent, insulating agent and care product. It is designed for mineral oil-free lubrication and surface protection on many material-compatible parts such as rubber, plastic, wood, leather (including artificial leather), as well as metal, glass and textiles. The silicone layer is invisible, non-sticky and creates a durable protective film in a wide temperature range of -50°C to +200°C.

What Makes Silicone Spray Different?

  • Mineral oil-free lubrication – clean alternative to oils and greases
  • Low surface tension – wets surfaces very well for even coverage
  • Water- and dirt-repellent – helps protect against moisture and contamination
  • Non-sticky protective layer – does not leave a greasy film
  • Stable temperature performance from -50°C to +200°C
  • Also useful as a release agent to prevent sticking and adhesion

Typical Use Cases

Rubber & Seals (Car, Home, Outdoor)

  • Door and window seals: helps keep rubber supple and reduces freezing and embrittlement
  • Refrigerator/freezer seals: suitable for low temperatures to keep seals flexible
  • Garage doors & roller shutters: reduces squeaks and improves sliding in guide rails

Vehicle Care & Maintenance

  • Exterior plastic trims: helps refresh appearance and reduce brittleness caused by weather/UV exposure
  • Wiper rubber care: apply to a cloth (not directly to the windshield) to help reduce smearing and jerking
  • Seat belt retraction: mineral oil-free lubrication can help improve retraction without oily residues
  • Window rubbers: apply via cloth to reduce squeaking and maintain flexibility

Workshop, Industry & Outdoor Gear

  • Release agent: helps reduce sticking in presses, casting, and assembly tasks
  • Assembly aid: useful for hoses, pipes, O-rings, fittings where reduced friction helps
  • Insulating & moisture protection: can protect certain electrical parts from moisture (not a contact cleaner)
  • Textile impregnation (limited use): can help make some synthetic surfaces more water-repellent (for pure waterproofing, dedicated impregnation sprays may be preferred)

Important Notes – What NOT to Use It For

  • Not for V-belts: reduces friction and can cause slipping (belt may stop squeaking but won’t work correctly)
  • Not for tire treads or brakes: silicone is a lubricant; use only very carefully on tire sidewalls via a cloth if needed
  • Not for pedals: slip risk
  • Not a contact spray: silicone insulates; contact sprays are meant to improve electrical conductivity
  • Coating/painting warning: silicone is difficult to remove; surfaces planned for painting, coating or gluing must be silicone-free

How to Apply Correctly

  1. Ensure the surface is dry, clean and grease-free.
  2. Shake the can well before use.
  3. Spray evenly from about 25 cm distance.
  4. Allow to dry, then optionally buff with a soft clean cloth.
  5. Repeat if needed to increase effect.

FAQ

Is Ballistol Silicone Spray oily or greasy?

No. It is a clean, mineral oil-free silicone layer that is typically odorless, invisible, and non-sticky compared to classic oil/grease lubricants.

Can I use it on rubber door seals to prevent freezing?

Yes. It is commonly used to keep rubber seals supple and help reduce freezing and brittleness on doors, windows, trunks, and similar seals.

Can I spray it directly on windshield wipers?

It’s better to apply it to a clean cloth first, then wipe the wiper rubber. Direct spraying can easily apply too much product.

Is it safe to use as a contact spray for electronics?

No. Silicone spray has an insulating and water-repellent effect and is not intended to improve electrical contact. Use a dedicated contact cleaner instead.

Can I paint or glue a surface after using silicone spray?

Not without proper removal. Silicone acts as a release agent and can cause paint, coatings, or adhesives to fail. Use a suitable silicone remover if repainting/coating is required.

What temperature range does the protective film withstand?

The silicone film is described as stable from -50°C up to +200°C.

Glossary

  • Silicone: A synthetic polymer with water-repellent, lubricating and releasing properties; forms a stable protective layer on many surfaces
  • Release agent: A substance that prevents sticking/adhesion between materials, useful in presses, molding, and tight contact areas
  • Insulating agent: Material that reduces electrical conductivity and helps protect components from moisture-related leakage currents
  • CLP/GHS: EU/UN system for classification and labeling of chemical hazards
